Hey Everybody,
I know that you all wanted me to take pictures and keep you updated on my gardening adventures this year, so I decided to make a blog! This will be my first year seriously trying to grow giant pumpkins. This whole adventure of mine started last year when I picked up a package of seeds that said it would produce pumpkins over 300 pounds. Without doing anything special I got two pumpkins that were between 100-150 pounds!
This year I am going serious. I have seeds from the best Vermont pumpkins and others (a good selection well over 1000 pounds or have genetics to back it up). I am looking forward to a good year and I am going to pull out lots of the basic techniques for growing giants, such as proper soil treatment, burying roots, fertilizing properly, shading from sun, etc. A few things will be left out such as pre-frost greenhouses (so I will lose about a week or two of growing that others have), and hand fertilization (I have my own plans which will be explained in a later blog), and a couple other little things. Overall, it should be a good growing season. My next blogs will be educating you guys about my plans and techniques, then hit May and let the real fun begin, but for now enjoy the history of giant pumpkins and the plans for my year!
-Trevor
(This picture is of my 100-150 pound pumpkin from last year, remember that was all accidental and next year is going to be bigger. One can also see the small pie pumpkin in the back ground and I propped up my main pumpkin on two logs, so if you imagine the size of an average log and then add up logs to get an idea of the size. I will post pictures of serious grower's and their pumpkins later in the blog.)
